Day 14
Dedicated to my friends John and Gloria who are doing their own Camino, in a different way.
We left late- 8:15. OMG - we slept in until 6:30. On our own - K and S are bussing to Burgos. We did 20.5 km today.
I feel great! Long hike into Burgos. First we had to find the Albergue where we had sent the backpacks. However, we first stopped in the suburbs to buy a sweater and a Camino buff, and get money out of the bank. I had lost my lenses cleaner in Villafranca- the only thing I lost and I had been bemoaning the fact ever since. When I sat on a bench to figure out where we were, Nancy went into the optical shop right in front of us and asked for a lenses wipe. He gave her two! God bless her for doing that. It made me cry!
We saw half of the Edmonton group of 9 on our hike today. We hadn't seen any of that original group of 40 starting out from Orisson on Day 2, in a few days (other than K and S) so it was nice to see them. They wanted to know if we had seen their companion with the leg braces. I said "Oh, you mean the Bishop? No, we saw God, but not the Bishop."
They got a chuckle out of that!
We are in a lovely apartment in the heart of Burgos, booked through AirBnb, and celebrating Nancy's birthday one day early. Fiesta time!💥 Sari and Katherina have made a lovely supper of salad, chicken, bread, wine and Nancy's favourite- apple pie for dessert. I don't know what we have done to deserve meeting such generous people who are now such wonderful friends.
All in all a great day, although the hike through Burgos, first entering through the industrial part, past the airport and then the burbs, before hitting the old town, was very hard on the feet and lower back. We pounded a lot of pavement!
Burgos is a beautiful city. You must see the Cathedral. People are wonderfully friendly and always ever so helpful.
As Nancy and I walked a lot alone, we shared a lot of our emotional baggage. I know I have some to get rid of, and I think I am letting go of some of it on this Camino.
We have been hiking for two weeks, and I wouldn't change a single, solitary day, or minute of it.
I carry you all in my thoughts and prayers, especially Gloria and John, today. Bless you both!
With much love and gratitude from Burgos, Spain.
